While Marvel Rivals has a huge roster of Marvel’s most recognizable heroes, director Guangguang confirmed that the Netease development team has been given complete freedom from Marvel to create original characters for the game.
In an interview with MP1st, Guangguang explained that the option is indeed on the table, but he didn’t confirm whether it’s in next year’s plans, especially since a list of characters has already been prepared. However, he did note that the door is wide open to adding entirely new characters.
It may seem odd given Marvel’s 70+ years of characters and stories, but it’s not unprecedented. Luna Snow first appeared in the Marvel Future Fight game, and then went on to become a huge hit and become part of the comics in 2019.
The game has also proven its ability to take lesser-known characters and turn them into household names, such as Jeff the Shark, increasing the likelihood that any original character could have similar success.
For now, it’s still a possibility, but giving Netease this freedom could open the door to new heroes that the player community is eagerly awaiting.
What do you think? Would you rather see new original characters in Marvel Rivals or stick with Marvel’s massive legacy?
