During Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025, Game Science shocked its audience by revealing an all-new game called Black Myth: Zhong Kui, rather than announcing an anticipated expansion for Black Myth: Wukong.
CEO Feng Ji wrote in a post on Weibo that the decision to abandon the expansion came as a result of an overwhelming feeling of “confusion, emptiness and a kind of dread,” amid immense pressure from repeated questions about the timing and content of the expansion. Although he recognized that these demands came from a loyal audience, he felt the best option was to relaunch.
The tipping point came when co-founder Yang Qi asked him: “Would you rather we start something new instead of expanding?” Feng Ji felt as if a burden had been lifted. The team decided to take the plunge and build a new project from scratch.
The team explained that Zhong Kui will introduce a new protagonist, different gameplay, cutting-edge technologies and graphics, and an entirely new storyline, describing the project as an attempt to free themselves from rigid molds and try something bolder.
The new game is destined for consoles and PC but is still in its very early stages. According to the studio’s statements: “The project is nothing more than a blank folder so far.” In other words, there’s not even a playable demo to share or details about the story.
While the wait may be long, fans are on the cusp of an experience that could create a new legend out of thin air.
