Mike Booth, the creator of the popular Left 4 Dead series, took to social media to announce a new project in development: A 4-player cooperative shooter that carries the same spirit of L4D in terms of cooperation, tension, and replayability.
Booth, who currently works at J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Games, posted a message on Left 4 Dead 2’s Reddit forum saying:
I’m Mike Booth (creator of Left 4 Dead), and I’m currently working on a new project that builds on the foundations that made L4D such a special experience. If you liked the cooperation, tension, and replayability of my previous games, you’ll find this project interesting. We’re in the early stages of development, and we’re now opening registration for early tests for a limited group of players.
Reactions have been overwhelmingly enthusiastic, with many seeing the game as the true spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead, as the series has been practically on hiatus since the release of its second installment in 2009.
In 2021, Turtle Rock Studios (L4D’s original studio) tried to revive the experience with Back 4 Blood, but it failed to meet players’ expectations.
Interestingly, Mike Booth himself worked at Turtle Rock more than a decade ago, later moving on to Blizzard before ending up at Bad Robot Games.
Booth didn’t mention the word “zombies” in his announcement, but he did emphasize that the project will take the cooperative format to new heights that he has always wanted to explore. However, many don’t rule out the return of similar creatures or enemies in the future.
The game is still in its infancy, but it could rekindle enthusiasm for a genre that many have been missing for years.
