Nearly a decade after Prey 2 was canceled, a new set of clips posted on YouTube by David Halsted, a former developer at Human Head Studios, gives us a glimpse of what the game could have been.
The five clips included:
- Thegame’s opening mission.
- Ademonstration of the agile combat system.
- Early exploratory shots of the environment.
- Experimental chase scenes.
- Most importantly, a 10-minute gameplay demo showcasing the open-ended gameplay as an alien bounty hunter.
Prey (2006) was an early success on Xbox 360, prompting the announcement of a direct sequel but the project ran into major development issues, only to be officially canceled in 2014 by Bethesda.
In 2017, an Arkane Studios-developed Prey remake was released, but it went for a psychological survival/horror experience on a space station, a far cry from the open-world idea that Human Head was working on.
Pete Hines said at the time:
“It was a project that we believed in, but we didn’t see it going in the right direction. It didn’t reach the level of quality we wanted, so we made the decision to cancel. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was necessary.
While Prey (2017) received good reviews, many gamers still wonder what the original sequel would have looked like had it been completed, especially with the idea of playing as an alien bounty hunter in an open world full of chases and challenges.
