Since its release in 2015, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was highly controversial among fans of the series. The game offered revolutionary open-world gameplay and complete freedom in carrying out missions, but it ended abruptly and was considered by many to be incomplete.
On September 3, 2025, Hideo Kojima posted an article from Inverse titled:
10 years later… Kojima’s unfinished masterpiece still influences games today.
The move was interpreted as a tacit admission by Kojima that the game was indeed unfinished when it was released.
Fans of the series know that the famous dispute between Kojima and Konami during the final stages of development resulted in important content being cut from the game. The Collector’s Edition included graphics and clips from an unfinished episode that would have ended the story, but this content never officially saw the light of day.
Despite the ambiguous ending, The Phantom Pain remains a milestone in gaming history and is considered by some to be Kojima’s last great achievement in the Metal Gear series. But the question remains: would the game have been the best game in the series’ history had it actually been completed?
