Interest continues to build for Sony Pictures’ new Resident Evil film directed by Zach Cregger (Weapons), which is set to hit theaters on September 18, 2026. While details of the story are being kept under wraps, it has been revealed that a new big name has joined the cast.
According to an exclusive report from Deadline,actor Paul Walter Hauser has joined the movie in an as-yet-undisclosed role. Hauser joins star Austin Abrams, who was previously announced to star in the movie.
Known for his ability to move between comedy and drama, Hauser has found success in recent years with back-to-back box office hits. He appeared in Fantastic Four: First Steps as Mole Man and portrayed Capt. Ed Hocken Jr. in The Naked Gun. in The Naked Gun. In addition, he won an Emmy and Golden Globe for his performance in Apple TV+’s Black Bird.
Hauser’s collaboration with a director of Cregger’s caliber, who had a smash hit with his last film Weapons, reinforces the high expectations for Resident Evil. Although character details are still vague, Sony is clearly aiming for a strong cinematic remake of the iconic series.
With a star of this caliber joining the cast, Resident Evil looks set to be one of the biggest cinematic releases of 2026.
