Ever since players began their journey in ARC Raiders, they have bonded with Scrappy, the strange rooster who greets you in the Raider Den and silently gathers resources for you as you face the dangers of ARC and the rest of the Raiders. Despite his constant presence, no one knew how he appeared in this harsh, almost lifeless world.
Embark Studio has revealed the true story behind Scrappy, and it’s simpler and more beautiful than players realize.
In a new post on the ARC Raiders website, Johan, the artist behind Scrappy, recounts a funny incident that sparked the character’s creation. Johan says he used to live with his chicken-raising parents and during a Zoom meeting, a number of chickens broke into the house and started walking around behind him in front of the camera, stealing all the limelight.
Among those chickens was a rooster named Håkan who was different from everyone else: Friendly, tame, blind in one eye and stumbling a lot while walking, Johan loved him so much that in a moment of hilarity he decided to 3D scan him and secretly insert him into an early version of the game.
Håkan first appeared as a small figure running around in the initial development and after a while the team needed a resource producer, an entity within Raider Den that gives the player materials after each raid, many ideas like robots, cats or a robot cat were thrown around but there was no time to build any of them until someone suddenly said, “Don’t we have a rooster ready? “Don’t we have a ready-made rooster?
That fleeting suggestion was the turning point as Håkan went from a secret joke to a temporary character to an indispensable object within the ARC Raiders universe and over time Scrappy became a small symbol of fun amidst a harsh and dark world.
