Crystal Dynamics has revealed that Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, slated for release in 2026, will receive difficulty adjustments compared to the original version, which was notoriously brutal and filled with instant death.
During a presentation at GamesRadar+, developer Will Kerslake was asked about how the game’s difficulty would be handled, especially with the sudden fatal obstacles that players encountered in the original version:
“Part of reimagining the game properly is adjusting it to the tastes of modern gamers.
He explained that the goal is not to simplify the experience to the point of making it unchallenging, but to strike a balance that ensures fun without excessive frustration.
Despite these modifications, Kerslake emphasized that the core of the series will remain, stressing that the game will contain puzzles based on combat and navigation, death-defying action moments, and iconic elements such as giant rolling balls and classic traps, adding that everything players have come to expect from Tomb Raider will be present and in abundance.
The Tomb Raider Anniversary edition previously offered solutions to the high difficulty issue by adding quick interactive events to bypass some of the instant death moments, an approach that Legacy of Atlantis appears to be taking even further.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis seeks to strike a balance between maintaining the identity of the original game and providing a smoother experience for a new generation of players without sacrificing the challenges that made the series famous.
