After the surprise announcement of the new Divinity game during The Game Awards 2025, studio Larian has finally come out to clarify the most important questions that have plagued fans of the series, especially after previously confirming that there are no plans to develop Divinity: Original Sin 3.
In a new interview with The Gamer, studio founder Swen Vincke confirmed that the next Divinity game will be a turn-based RPG that supports cooperative multiplayer.
He explained that some of the criticisms of Baldur’s Gate 3 were claiming that it was more like Divinity: Original Sin 3 because of the DNA similarity between the two games, but he noted that this is not necessarily a negative, adding:
If you liked Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll likely enjoy the new Divinity game as well.
The omission of Original Sin from the title raised questions about the game’s identity and gameplay, but this statement confirms that the core of the series is still in place and the role-playing system will remain the basis of the experience, although the focus will be on cooperation between players.
The real challenge for Larian now is to develop the role-playing system without relying on the rules of Dungeons & Dragons while introducing new innovations that build on the foundations of Original Sin instead of repeating them.
In conjunction with this announcement, Divinity: Original Sin 2 recently received a free upgrade for current-gen consoles.
