Larian Studio has clarified that players do not need to play previous installments of the Divinity series before starting the upcoming new game in the series, emphasizing that the experience will be suitable for everyone, whether they are old followers or new players.
This came during a recent interview with GamesRadar+, where studio founder Swen Finke talked about how the new game relates to the events of the previous series and explained that some events from old games such as Ego Draconis and The Dragon Knight Saga will be mentioned within the general background of the world, but they are now only part of its history and do not affect the understanding of the current story.
Fincke noted that players who enjoyed the cinematic experience and storytelling in Baldur’s Gate 3 are not required to return to the older games unless they want to delve deeper into the game world in terms of story and history. For those interested in tactical combat, cooperative play, or broad freedom in gameplay, Divinity: Original Sin 2 may be a good choice to understand the design roots on which Baldur’s Gate 3 was built.
He added that the older games are relatively outdated in terms of systems and technologies, but they remain a good option for fans of the series who want to know every detail associated with the Divinity universe.
In a related context, the studio confirmed that the next Divinity game will follow the early access system as usual with the studio’s previous titles, while supporting turn-based combat and the possibility of cooperative play from the early stages, and with this approach, Larian reaffirms its philosophy of making its games accessible and accessible to new players without sacrificing the depth of the experience for longtime fans of the series.
