According to the report, these concerns began to crystallize at high levels within the industry since last December, where serious discussions are taking place about the availability of RAM and its direct impact on the ability to manufacture gaming devices in large quantities at competitive prices, and the concern is not limited to the next generation but extends to the current generation as well.
Over the past few months, RAM prices have reportedly risen by several hundred percent as major tech companies have been buying huge amounts to support AI servers, and with no signs of this demand abating in the near future, memory is expected to remain a real bottleneck in the global supply chain.
This reality puts gaming hardware manufacturers in a very complicated situation. In previous generations, it has always relied on selling devices with low or even subsidized profit margins in the hope of compensating for this from sales of games and services, but with the rise in RAM prices, it seems that the next generation of devices may come at much higher prices than any previous generation.
According to Insider Gaming, some companies are discussing the option of postponing the launch of the next generation from the currently planned 2027-2028 window, in the hope that memory manufacturers can expand their production capacities, which may later lead to lower prices and stabilize the market.
Regardless of the final decision, the next two years could see additional price increases for current-generation devices if the memory crisis continues and manufacturing costs rise.
