As development and marketing costs escalate, the gaming industry is heading towards a new pricing phase. In an interview, Greg Reisdorf, former director of multiplayer for the Call of Duty series, said that raising the price of AAA games to $80 is not the end of the line, but rather the first step in a larger transition that is inevitably coming.
Reisdorf explains that all publishers recognize the inevitability of this shift, but the hesitation lies in who starts first. In his opinion, the game most capable of breaking the $100 barrier is GTA 6 due to Rockstar’s high confidence and track record of delivering high-quality experiences that make players feel like they are getting their money’s worth.
He believes that the success of GTA 6 at a high price will set a market precedent that will encourage other publishers to adopt the same pricing, especially in light of the increasing pressure from investors and development budgets rising to unprecedented levels.
