New information has revealed that The Last of Us Part 2 in early development included a gameplay feature called Hold Up, a mechanic that allows the player to force enemies to surrender under threat instead of killing them outright.
Although this idea was abandoned before the final release, it was not completely deleted from the game’s files, as a number of file miners were able to find the code and animations associated with the feature, confirming that it was at a relatively advanced stage of development.
The feature would have added significant depth to the stealth mode, as the player could sneak behind the enemy and threaten him to force him to raise his hands and temporarily prevent him from attacking or controlling his movement and facing the possibility of the enemy resisting or trying to grab the weapon, adding more tension and realism to the clashes.

One of the modders confirmed that the software structure of the feature still exists within the game and began working on rebuilding it and activating it through a custom modification taking advantage of not being completely deleted by the developers, and it is expected that this addition will be exclusive to the computer version of the game due to the lack of support for the home versions of the modifications.
The modder also noted that fully activating the feature requires significant time and effort to ensure its compatibility with current combat and stealth systems.
The unofficial return of the Hold Up feature highlights the amount of ambitious ideas that never made it to the final version of the game and reflects the development team at Naughty Dog’s previous endeavor to offer a more diverse and realistic stealth system, even if it ended up being scaled back for design or narrative reasons.
These discoveries open the door to a perennial question: How many big ideas are still hidden inside game files?
