AI controversy hits Battlefield 6

The AI controversy has returned to the Battlefield 6 community after the discovery of what is believed to be an AI-generated design in the new Windchill pack. Observant players have spotted illogical details in one of the player card stickers, leading many to believe that it is the result of faulty AI tools.

The spark started from the Battlefield forum on Reddit, where a user posted an image of a poster showing a soldier in a snowflake shape holding an M4A1 rifle, but the design contained noticeable errors, most notably the presence of two barrels on top of each other in addition to what appears to be double hand guards, which are unrealistic details in the world of weapons and are often considered a common feature of AI-generated work.

The image quickly went viral on social media, with gamers expressing their displeasure, some seeing it as a minor issue and not worth the outrage, while others saw it as a clear indication of a deeper issue creeping into the gaming industry and one user’s writings:

On the other hand, the comments were more severe, with one gamer saying:

Others directly criticized the use of AI in art, arguing that it relies on plagiarized works and reduces the opportunities for real artists, and called on EA to invest in artists instead of relying on machine-generated art.

This controversy comes at a delicate time for the industry, as the debate over the limits of AI in game development is escalating, especially after experiments and games that were announced to have been created entirely using AI were not well received by the public.

So far, neither EA nor the Battlefield 6 development team has issued any official comment confirming or denying the use of AI in the design of the Windchill package, but the incident has reopened a wide debate about whether it is acceptable to use these technologies even for small cosmetic elements within huge games with huge budgets.
