In an extensive report from The New Yorker, new details have been revealed about the Elden Ring movie adaptation of the 2022 Game of the Year award-winning game.
The report explained that director Alex Garland, known for works such as Ex Machina and 28 Days Later, pitched the idea of turning Elden Ring into a movie to A24 studio 5 years ago. During a meeting with A24’s head of film Noah Sacco, Garland played the game on PlayStation and asked if it could be adapted for cinema.
After initial approval, Garland wrote a 160-page script and accompanied it with 40 illustrations depicting his vision of the game’s world. Sako then took the director to Japan to meet with FromSoftware and the game’s creator, Hidetaka Miyazaki, where the project was officially approved.
The movie will be backed by big names such as novelist George R.R. Martin. R. R. Martin (Game of Thrones), one of the original contributors to the game’s world-building. This is the second video game adaptation project A24 is working on after Death Stranding with director Michael Sarnoski.
The history of game adaptations in cinema is full of failures, but Garland’s enthusiasm and A24’s creativity give hope that Elden Ring will be an exceptional experience that will satisfy gamers and critics alike.
