Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has only been out for one week, but early indications of public reaction are not in the game’s favor, especially on Metacritic, where it has seen one of the lowest user ratings in the series’ history despite a relatively good critical reception.
In terms of official reviews, Black Ops 7 currently has a critical rating of 84/100 based on 16 reviews, but the picture is quite different when it comes to user reviews, with only 1.6/10 from more than 540 reviews, a figure that places the game among the worst releases in the series in terms of player acceptance.
For comparison, Modern Warfare 3 (2023), one of the weakest installments in the series in terms of criticism with a rating of only 56, has a higher user rating than Black Ops 7 at 2.3/10.
This collapse in ratings reflects several issues that emerged from the first day of launch, most notably the controversy over the use of art ificial intelligence in the design of ID cards and some art assets, which forced Activision to respond immediately after the accusations escalated, in addition to that, the entire cooperative story mode received a wide campaign of criticism in which it was described as absurd and far from the level of the series, especially after the great success of the Black Ops 6 campaign last year.
And it doesn’t stop at the ratings, as the game has so far failed to break the 100,000 player barrier on Steam, while competing games like ARC Raiders and Battlefield 6 continue to achieve numbers between 200-300,000 players per day.
These indicators suggest that Black Ops 7 has not succeeded in attracting the audience as expected, even if its commercial future may remain strong thanks to the Call of Duty name. However, the current ratings are subject to change, especially with the possibility of spam reviews and the arrival of more veteran players to fully experience the game, but in the eyes of many, the damage has already been done.
Does Black Ops 7 deserve such a low rating, or have the reactions been too harsh?
