Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has officially entered the market, and with it, players have started sharing their impressions of the new story mode that brought the series back to the Mason family, specifically the character of David Mason, after a long absence since Black Ops 2. Despite the great enthusiasm that preceded the launch of the game, the reactions to the campaign came far below expectations.
Black Ops 7 adopts the idea of a fully cooperative campaign and puts players in a “hallucinatory” experience full of nightmares in which the main characters, including David, face both Menendez and The Guild, and despite the ambition of the idea, the execution did not meet the approval of a large part of the audience.
On Reddit, discussions have increased since the first day of the launch, and opinions varied from “the worst campaign in the history of the series” to “it’s okay”, but the common denominator between most comments is that the campaign is not up to the required level, and user AdBudget5468 considered that the success of modes such as Zombies and Warzone harmed the story campaigns, and Black Ops 7 is clear evidence of this.
Other users like Solid_Snek120 and Shadowdemon210 likened what happened here to Modern Warfare 3 (2023), which caused a stir due to its short and fragmented campaign, while others like Top_Limit_ and SetScary9216 felt that Black Ops 6’s campaign was more polished and organized and that the new installment does not come close to its level.
As of this writing, Black Ops 7 has yet to surpass 100,000 players on Steam, while ARC Raiders has consistently surpassed 300,000 and Battlefield 6 continues to attract between 200-250,000 players per day.
Despite these indicators, Call of Duty remains one of the strongest brands in the industry, and the game is likely to sell well as usual, but how well it compares to previous releases remains unclear, and with the disappointment of story mode fans, many hope that the series will return to the approach of Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare in offering coherent campaigns that are not only used to serve the Battle Royale modes.
