In February 2023, Microsoft signed a 10-year deal to bring the Call of Duty series to Nintendo platforms, in conjunction with its historic acquisition of Activision Blizzard, and although a long time has passed since this announcement, Nintendo platforms have yet to receive any actual release of the series.
According to Windows Central’s Jez Corden, the first Call of Duty title for the Switch 2 is just a few months away from launch.
Corden explained that the main reason behind the delay is the lack of development tools for the Switch 2, an issue that was widely known even before the official launch of the device in June, and that this lack has hindered the process of porting and developing games on the new platform during the past period.
So far, no details have been revealed about which part of Call of Duty will be released on the Switch 2, which has opened the door to speculation among gamers. There are several possibilities, most notably the launch of Warzone as the easiest and fastest option to reach a large segment of the device’s users or the porting of a recent version such as Black Ops 6.
On the other hand, some gamers are skeptical that Black Ops 7 can reach the Switch 2 at this time due to the performance requirements and technologies used, so many believe that the safest bet is Warzone, especially with the series’ increasing focus on the free and cross-platform experience.
These expectations are bolstered by recent reports that Sledgehammer has begun hiring developers with experience in AAA games on mobile or Switch, which some have taken as a direct indication that Call of Duty is coming to the Nintendo system.
If realized, this would be a major turning point for Call of Duty’s relationship with Nintendo platforms after a years-long absence and could pave the way for the series to return to a whole new audience on the Switch 2.
