Netflix continues to accelerate work on Assassin’s Creed, with a new report revealing that Swedish director Johan Renck of Chernobyl fame will take the helm.
According to a report published by Variety, the choice of Renck reflects Netflix’s desire to offer a serious and relatively dark treatment of the Assassin’s Creed universe, utilizing his previous experience in heavy dramas. In addition to Chernobyl, Renck has previously directed works such as The Last Panther as well as episodes of popular series including Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Vikings, and Bates Motel.
Roberto Patino and David Wiener will also work on the series as creators, production managers and executive producers, with Ubisoft Film & Television names including Gérard Guillemot and Margaret Boykin, along with Austin Dill, Matt O’Toole and Geneviève Jones executive producing.
Although the story details have not been fully revealed yet, the official description reveals that the series will center around a secret war between two mysterious factions, one of which seeks to control the future of humanity through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will, a conflict familiar to fans of the series between the Assassins and the Templars.
The description also suggests that the series will follow multiple characters across historical milestones as their fates intersect with major events in history as they attempt to influence the future of humanity, which is in line with the series’ video game core.
The announcement comes weeks after Toby Wallace was confirmed as the lead, reinforcing the impression that the project is starting to enter a clearer production phase, and with a name like Johan Renck on board, all eyes are now on whether Assassin’s Creed can finally deliver a successful adaptation worthy of the series’ storied history.
