Following the surprise reveal of the next chapter in Larian’s Divinity series, owners of current-gen consoles are in for an extra surprise as Divinity: Original Sin 2 is officially available today on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2.
Even better, the new version comes as a free upgrade for owners of previous versions, as users can head to their platform’s store and download the Upgrade Pack directly at no additional cost.
In some regions, specifically in Japan, Switch and PS4 owners will be required to pay a nominal amount of 100 yen just to get the upgrade, which is a minor exception compared to other regions.
Although Divinity: Original Sin 2 has received widespread critical acclaim since its original release, the version available on current-gen consoles is the Definitive Edition, which includes all post-launch updates, new missions, additional equipment sets, redesign and optimization of the final chapter, and extensive balance and performance improvements that make the experience more integrated and smoother than the initial release.
While the game doesn’t support mods in the same depth that we later saw in Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian has officially included a number of popular community mods such as increased movement speed, automatic source point regeneration, and various gameplay improvements, all of which are available from the start without any additional settings.
Despite its radical difference from Baldur’s Gate 3 in terms of the classic turn-based combat system, Divinity: Original Sin 2 retains its own charm thanks to the quality of writing, narrative, and great freedom in building characters with tactical depth in battles.
These elements made the game one of the best modern RPGs, and it’s still worth checking out today.
