In an unexpected surprise, Team Soda’s Escape from Duckov became a resounding success after selling more than 1 million copies in just 5 days after its release on PC, outselling some AAA games in the same period.
The game, a parody of the popular title Escape from Tarkov published by China’s Bilibili Games, offers gameplay that combines light-hearted satire with a real challenge in a single-player (PvE), extract-and-survive shooter experience.
In Escape from Duckov, players control a duck trying to survive in a chaotic world full of other bird enemies while performing various missions, upgrading personal stash, and exploring dangerous areas in a resource-based, survival style.
Within the first 24 hours of launch, the game recorded 200,000 copies sold before surpassing the 1 million mark within 5 days, reaching more than 250,000 concurrent players on Steam to become the most traded game on the platform during the week.
Producer Jeff Chen said in an official statement:
“Team Soda is incredibly humbled by this incredible success. “We are indebted to our amazing community of players and to our partners at Bilibili Games. Whether you’ve been with us since the early days of the demo or have recently joined, we thank you for your support.
This milestone is one of the most successful Extraction Shooter launches ever, especially since the game is a single-player experience in a market dominated by multiplayer, and its success seems to prove that innovation and humor can open the door to a new category of serious survival experiences mixed with fun.
At a time when major companies like Ubisoft, EA, and Battlestate Games are trying to appeal to the tactical shooter crowd, Team Soda was able to create a global buzz with an unexpected game. Escape from Duckov not only made fun of the genre, but proved to be a real contender with its clever design, ease of experience, and high dose of humor.
