Naoki Yoshida, known to gamers as Yoshi-P and director of Final Fantasy 14, has revealed that after more than 12 years of continuous success, the game has reached a point where it requires a radical change in the way its content is designed.
In an interview with JP Games, Yoshida explained that the current system no longer meets the expectations of all players:
“I’ve recently begun to feel that the current way of delivering content is no longer in line with players’ preferences. This feeling has increased since the beginning of this year.
He noted that the change is not limited to the upcoming expansions, but will include a complete overhaul of the game’s structure.
Over the years, the development team has divided the content into 3 main categories:
- Hardcore (professionals)
- Mid-core (Intermediate)
- Casual (casual players)
This strategy, while successful in the past, has created an isolation between the groups. Content intended for professionals is almost invisible from the perspective of casual players, and vice versa.
Yoshida emphasized that the goal is not to abandon any type of content, but to develop a design approach that ensures each update is fun and valuable for all groups.
This new approach will debut with Update 7.35 (no release date yet), following the release of Update 7.31 last week. The new content will include Pilgrim’s Traverse, which Yoshida described as an experience that he wants players to share feedback on, both positive and critical.
Yoshida concluded:
“The current content system has served us well from A Realm Reborn to Update 7.2, but after 12 years of success, it’s time to move on. We’re excited about the change and what it will bring to the future of the game.
