With development on the third installment of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy nearing completion, it seems that the series is far from over. In a recent interview with WccfTech, director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed that an additional expansion or even an entirely new title could be released after the third installment launches.
When asked if the team has plans for a Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (Part 2) expansion, Hamaguchi explained that the idea was on the table earlier but that the team has reconsidered its priorities, saying:
We realized that what the audience wants more than anything else is to deliver Part 3 as quickly as possible, so we made it our top priority.
He emphasized that development is running smoothly and that the game already has a large amount of playable content, indicating that work on the third part is nearing its final stages.
Although the third installment will complete the main storyline of the trilogy, Hamaguchi made it clear that this does not mean the end of the project:
“There is a possibility of an expansion after the release of Part 3, and we are considering the possibility of developing a whole new title set in the same world.
He added that the growing global interest in the Final Fantasy series following the success of the remakes has the team thinking seriously about how to capitalize on the current momentum to further expand the world of the series.
Since the release of Part 1 of the remake in 2020, the game world has expanded significantly across multiple projects such as Crisis Core: Reunion and Ever Crisis, making the idea of a fourth game or additional narrative expansion make sense as part of Square Enix’s plan to keep players interested in the series.
With Hamaguchi’s statement, it seems that Square Enix does not intend to simply retell the events of the original game, but may seek to expand the world, character stories, and perhaps even introduce an entirely new adventure inspired by the world of Final Fantasy 7.
With the official reveal of Part 3 coming next year, it’s clear that the Final Fantasy 7 remake is not just a trilogy, but a long-term project that reimagines the series’ identity for a new generation of players.
