It seems that things are not going well at Square Enix regarding the Final Fantasy 9 remake project, as reliable leaker NateTheHate has revealed that the game’s development has been paused, leaving its future in limbo.
In response to a question on the X platform about the latest updates on the project, Nate explained that the game may be on ice and that development has been halted for the time being, noting that it is unknown whether the company will resume it or not.
This news comes after a series of negative reports that have followed the game since the beginning of the year, with reports that the development process was in difficulty and at risk of being canceled altogether.
Earlier this year, Square Enix celebrated the 25th anniversary of the original game with a new website and posted a quote from the game’s ending on its official account, which gamers interpreted at the time as a direct hint that a remake was imminent.
However, after these implicit promises, there was complete silence about the project until leaks returned to confirm that work on the project is currently on hold, disappointing many fans of the series who were waiting to see one of the most beloved Final Fantasy installments with a modernized version similar to the Final Fantasy 7 remake.
While there has been no official statement from Square Enix, inside sources indicate that the company is restructuring its production strategy following the shaky financial performance of some of its recent titles, and it is believed that side projects or low-priority titles like the FF9 remake may be among the first to be affected by these plans.
With work continuing normally on the Final Fantasy 7 Part 3 remake, resources seem to be focused on titles that are more assured in terms of commercial success.
The question now remains whether Square Enix will revive the project later or whether Final Fantasy 9 will join the list of projects that never saw the light of day. With the 30th anniversary of the series coming up next year, there may be a small hope that the project will return as part of a larger celebratory plan, but as of now, its fate remains unknown.
