At the conclusion of Gamescom 2025, studio Game Science surprised its audience by revealing its new game Black Myth: Zhong Kui rather than an expansion for Black Myth: Wukong, which was released last year and was a resounding success.
While Zhong Kui is not a direct sequel to Wukong, the studio’s statement on its official website made it clear that the story will continue, stating: “To all our friends who love Black Myth: Wukong, the Journey West won’t end here.”
Game Science explained that its decision to move on to a new project stems from its desire to “take a bold first step to build new gameplay experiences,” “challenge ourselves with bolder features , ” and “introduce innovative ideas in narrative style and worlds.”
Despite the reassuring message, Game Science did not reveal whether the story will continue via additional content for the original game, or through a new installment after Zhong Kui, which is still in a very early development stage. Even the developers themselves emphasized that “no one has any idea” when it will be released.
Black Myth: Wukong will finally join the Xbox library on August 20, 2025, after initially releasing on other platforms last year.
Between a potential expansion or a new sequel, it’s a safe bet that the story of Journey to the West has yet to come to an end.
