The Coalition provided a brief but promising update on Gears of War: E-Day, emphasizing that it is the most ambitious project in the history of the series, and although no specific release date has been announced yet, the team is still sticking to the launch plan in 2026, giving fans of the series a lot to look forward to.
The Gears of War series debuted in 2006 and has continued for nearly two decades to become one of the pillars of third-person shooter games on the Xbox platform. The series has presented five main games and several sub-titles, all of which focused on humans facing the threat of the Locust in a bloody and cruel world led by iconic characters such as Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago.
After the last major release in 2019 with Gears 5, in 2024 Microsoft revealed a different project: Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel that takes us back to the first day of the Locust invasion and focuses on the early beginnings of Marcus and Dom.
In a year-end Xbox article, The Coalition studio head Mike Crump shared his vision of what lies ahead for the team in 2026, explaining that next year marks the 20th anniversary of the series and that the release of Gears of War: E-Day is the best possible way to commemorate the occasion.
Crumb emphasized that the game was developed entirely from scratch using Unreal Engine 5 to deliver an experience that “feels like Gears but played in a new style.” He added that the game represents a true return to the roots of the series as Marcus and Dom face the Locust for the first time, making it a perfect entry point for new players and a rich experience for longtime fans of the series.
Although no new gameplay or footage has been released since the first announcement in 2024, The Coalition and development partner People Can Fly’s confidence in the game’s ability to meet expectations is evident, and with Gears 5 being one of the most ambitious games in the series, many believe that E-Day could be the experience that Gears fans have been waiting years for.
With 2026 looming, the question remains as to the exact release date and whether the game will redefine the series as its developers promise or simply honor its long legacy with a modern twist.
