The Gamescom 2025 Opening Night Live event saw a special appearance of Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yotei, the highly anticipated sequel to 2020’s hugely successful Ghost of Tsushima. The new trailer showed an epic storyline and combat encounters that could make the game one of the most notable PlayStation titles this year.
Ghost of Yotei takes place more than 300 years after the events of Tsushima, with the player taking on the role of Atsu, a mercenary who seeks revenge on a group known as the Yotei Six who killed her family and left scars on her life.
During her journey, Atsu will navigate a vast open world between stealth and direct encounters, facing enemies with a variety of gameplay styles.
Despite the absence of protagonist Jin Sakai, the game borrows many of its core elements such as stealth and free-roaming combat. However, Ghost of Yotei introduces new enhancements, most notably weapons such as the Kusarigama and Yari (Japanese spear), adding greater strategic depth to the combat.
As a surprise part of the trailer, it was confirmed that the free Legends multiplayer mode will arrive in 2026, continuing to support the game post-launch.
Ghost of Tsushima was a huge success in 2020, receiving critical acclaim and multiple Game of the Year nominations including The Game Awards. Hopes are high that Ghost of Yotei will repeat the success and add a new chapter in the history of the series.
The game will be released on October 2, 2025 on PlayStation 5 and is one of the most notable PlayStation exclusives of the year.
