Imagine if legendary Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding director Hideo Kojima was behind a game adaptation of The Matrix, which could have actually happened in 1999 before Konami stopped the project before it began.
According to a new report from Time Extension, Chris Bergstresser, Konami’s former vice president of licensing, revealed that the Wachowskis approached Kojima after the release of The Matrix Part 1 to propose developing a game based on the series.
Bergstresser said:
“The Wachowskis were big fans of Kojima and came to Konami’s headquarters in Japan with their concept artist and said to him directly: “We want you to develop The Matrix, can you do it?
Konami executive producer Kazumi Kitaue, having the message translated for him, replied coldly: No.
According to the report, some Konami employees were very disappointed after rejecting the project, especially since it was an opportunity to expand Kojima’s fame globally after the success of Metal Gear Solid, and only 3 years after that meeting, Atari released Enter the Matrix in 2003 while Kojima was busy developing Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3.
At the time, Konami was so focused on developing the Metal Gear Solid series and other shooter projects that it avoided any new external commitments, but looking back now, it’s easy to imagine how creative Kojima could have been had he been given the opportunity to transform the world of The Matrix into an immersive game full of philosophy and science fiction, elements that perfectly intersect with his style.
Do you wish we had a Matrix game from Hideo Kojima at the end of the 90s? What do you imagine it would look like if it actually existed?
