As the debate over the use of artificial intelligence in the gaming industry rages on, renowned director Hideo Kojima has shared his own perspective on the technology, asserting that dismissing or downplaying its importance is no longer a realistic option.
In a recent interview with Nikkei Xtrend, detailed by GamesRadar+, Kojima likened the current state of AI to the advent of smartphones, explaining that these devices were initially met with widespread criticism before becoming an indispensable part of the lives of millions around the world.
Kojima pointed out that AI is on the same path, emphasizing that the most important thing is not to reject technology but to use it in a way that makes humans happier. He added that phrases such as ” we should not use AI” or ” AI is useless” are meaningless because technological progress is unstoppable.
Kojima also touched on the potential impact of AI on human-to-human communication, explaining that it may help people who find it difficult to interact face-to-face, but he warned of a potential downside of making humans more dependent and lazy, stressing the need to establish controls that minimize AI intervention or set aside periods of time to deliberately stay away from it.
Kojima’s remarks come at a time when the industry is in the midst of a heated debate on the topic, especially after the recent controversy surrounding the use of Larian’s AI.
Earlier reports revealed that Kojima could have been working on a game inspired by The Matrix universe before the project was canceled by Konami.
Kojima’s views remain a reflection of his philosophical view of technology, as he believes that AI is not a threat in itself, but rather a tool whose results depend on how it is used and the limits of its intervention in human life.
