More than 8 years after the release of the original game, Hollow Knight is making headlines again with a record-breaking 22,260 concurrent players on Steam, surpassing the last peak recorded in May 2022 at 20,300 players.
The spike in popularity came right after Team Cherry announced the release date for the highly anticipated sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, which will be released on September 4, 2025. The announcement came during the Gamescom 2025 Opening Night Live presentation with a new trailer that garnered more than 3 million views in less than 24 hours.
This revelation brought back thousands of players to experience the original game before Silksong’s release, which explains the massive spike in player numbers. Remarkably, Hollow Knight is still one of the top-rated games on Steam today, with an astounding 97% satisfaction rate out of more than 136,000 reviews, proving its status as an icon in the Metroidvania genre.
Between the success of the original game, the exceptional reviews, and the huge hype surrounding Silksong, it looks like September 2025 will be a milestone for fans of the series, and perhaps the moment when it becomes one of the biggest games of the decade.
