Team Cherry has officially announced that Hollow Knight is coming to the Switch 2 with an enhanced version, in conjunction with the announcement of a new free expansion for Hollow Knight: Silksong. The Switch 2 version is scheduled for release in 2026, with no exact date yet.
According to an official blog post from Team Cherry, Hollow Knight: Nintendo Switch 2 will offer a host of technical improvements including higher frame rates, improved resolution, and new graphical effects, and the team has posted official screenshots showing the visual enhancements that will take advantage of the Switch 2’s capabilities.
Team Cherry confirmed that all players who own Hollow Knight on Switch will be able to upgrade to the Switch 2 version completely free of charge, and noted that an additional update will be released to coincide with the launch of the new version and will bring general improvements and bug fixes to existing platforms as well.
Hollow Knight was first released in 2017 after a funding campaign via Kickstarter and quickly turned into one of the most successful independent Metroidvania games of the past decade thanks to challenging and elaborate gameplay, distinctive art design, and the mysterious and interconnected world of Hallownest. The Switch was one of the first platforms to receive the game in June 2018 before it later arrived on PlayStation and Xbox.
Hollow Knight: Silksong, released in 2025, was originally planned as an expansion to the first game before becoming a full-fledged standalone game, and Silksong was a huge success with several nominations and awards, including Game of the Year nominations.
With the announcement of the free Sea of Sorrow expansion for Silksong, also scheduled for 2026, players will be able to enjoy both parts of the series on Switch 2 in the best possible version at no additional cost.
