Team Cherry has officially announced a new expansion for Hollow Knight: Silksong called Sea of Sorrow in a post on the studio’s official website, the expansion will be completely free for all owners of the game and is scheduled to be released in 2026 without an exact date yet.
According to what the team revealed, the Sea of Sorrow expansion will take the main character Hornet to an entirely new nautical-themed area that includes a new environment for exploration, new tools and abilities, and new bosses with different designs and challenges, and Team Cherry indicated that more details will be revealed later as the release date approaches.
This announcement comes after the great success of Hollow Knight: Silksong following its release in September 2025 after a long wait since it was first announced in 2019. The game received wide critical acclaim from players and the media and succeeded in winning several year-end awards, most notably the Best Action/Adventure Game at The Game Awards 2025.
Although it was nominated for several major awards, including Game of the Year, it lost most of them to the record-breaking Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 at the ceremony, but this does not diminish Silksong’s status or the anticipation of what the Sea of Sorrow expansion will offer.
The decision to offer the expansion for free reflects Team Cherry’s well-known approach to supporting its games over the long term, as it did with the original Hollow Knight, which only adds to the excitement for players to explore more of Silksong’s world at no additional cost.
