New documents have revealed that Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Zero Dawn adaptation of the popular series is officially set to begin filming in 2026 with a target global release date of 2027.
This development comes at a time when Sony is locked in a legal battle with Tencent after being accused of copying the ideas and style of the Horizon series in its upcoming game Light of Motiram.
According to a report published by The Game Post, PlayStation Productions president Asad Qizilbash made an official statement under oath revealing that the movie has a ready-made script and that the team is currently looking for a suitable director to lead the project.
Qizilbash said that the movie is being developed in collaboration with Columbia Pictures, the same studio that worked with PlayStation on Uncharted (2022) and Gran Turismo (2023):
“We have a script ready, and we’re aiming to start shooting in 2026, with a release in 2027.
In the same documents, Qizilbash emphasized the importance of the character of Aloy, noting that she is not just a heroine within the Horizon series, but has become a major face of the PlayStation brand thanks to the success of the games and her iconic status with gamers around the world.
Despite these details, the documents did not reveal any additional information about the cast or story of the movie, but expectations are that it will be a mix of science fiction and survival in a post-apocalyptic world similar to the atmosphere of the original game.
This revelation comes in light of the ongoing legal conflict between Sony and Tencent, as the former accuses the Chinese company of violating the intellectual property rights of the Horizon series through its game Light of Motiram and Sony describes the game as a blatant copycat of Horizon while Tencent recently responded with a motion to dismiss the lawsuit.
Meanwhile, Splash Damage (developer of Gears Tactics) announced its separation from Tencent with the help of independent investors in a move that may reflect the growing tension between Western companies and the Chinese gaming and entertainment giant.
With Netflix’s Horizon 2074 TV series on the horizon, it seems that Sony is looking to expand the Horizon universe into as many mediums as possible, from games to cinema and television.
Are you looking forward to Horizon Zero Dawn? Who do you expect to play Aloy in the cinematic version?
