In a surprise for God of War fans, a set of images from a canceled project that was being worked on by Bluepoint, the studio known for redeveloping Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, have surfaced online. According to the authoritative website mp1st, the game was a group experience set in ancient Greece, specifically during the original trilogy of the series.
The leaked images indicate that the game would have taken the series back to the era of Greek mythology before moving to the Norse world, which means that the events would have taken place before the death of Hades in God of War 3.
The mp1st source also explained that Hades himself would have played a pivotal role in the story, perhaps as a main antagonist or as part of a gods-and-warriors-based multiplayer mode.
The project was reportedly led by Bluepoint in collaboration with Blur Studio, but it was canceled before the official announcement, and the available footage shows detailed environments with a design that resembles the classic series with a bloody atmosphere and fast-paced battles reminiscent of the original style of God of War 2 and Ascension.
Although there were no confirmed details about the gameplay or combat system, indications were that the game was headed for a live service project, which Sony seems to have decided to move away from after reevaluating its recent plans.
According to previous reports, Amazon Prime’ s God of War series will begin filming next year, and a new 2.5D side-scrolling game is said to be in development.
Seeing God of War return to its Greek roots through a group experience was an exciting idea, especially with Bluepoint’s technical capabilities, but sadly it seems that this project has become as much of a lost myth as Pandora’s Box itself.
Would you have liked to see a God of War game with a multiplayer mode that takes us back to the time of the first battles against the gods?
