After years of EA monopolizing the market with the FIFA series in the past and EA Sports FC in the present, it looks like the race to dominate soccer games may be reopening, and despite the lack of official announcements, internal changes within 2K are reigniting the rumors with a vengeance.
LinkedIn saw an interesting announcement from Matt McKie, who started his career for years within EA and held pivotal positions such as global brand manager for FIFA, and after his journey with Nike, the Olympic Games Committee and Manchester United, he joined 2K a year ago as a strategic advisor.
Mackey announced his official move to VP of Marketing at 2K but ended his letter with a sentence that caused quite a stir:
“We are assembling a first-class team to realize our bold vision for 2K’s next big sports franchise.
This statement alone has reopened the possibility of 2K entering the world of soccer, especially since the person making the statement is one of the deepest minds associated with the former FIFA series.
Since EA’s takeover of the scene, strong competition has only appeared for short periods of time, and with the separation of EA from the FIFA name, a series of reports began to talk about the desire of the FIFA organization to cooperate with a new entity, and here the name 2K appeared repeatedly, and although Take-Two did not directly announce the soccer project, its officials did not rule out the idea and even previously indicated that they are ready to enter if the right opportunity is found.
And with a former FIFA director officially talking about a new mega sports franchise, the possibility becomes more than just a rumor.
A soccer game from 2K could be the biggest challenge EA has faced in decades. The 2K series is known for its strength in detail, depth, and gameplay balance as the NBA 2K series proves every year and its entry into the soccer arena could ignite the competition that gamers have been waiting for for a long time.
Nothing is certain yet and there is nothing to officially prove that 2K is already working on a soccer game, but the presence of a figure from the FIFA core within EA, his now having senior marketing leadership at 2K and his announcement of a huge new sports franchise are all signs that make the possibility closer to reality than ever before.
