Kojima Productions is in the midst of a busy period of ambitious projects between the mysterious horror game OD and the secret project Physint, but studio founder Hideo Kojima emphasizes that his ambitions don’t stop at traditional game development.
In a video interview with WIRED, Kojima spoke candidly about his creative vision, explaining that he’s not focused on working within established genres:
“I want to be a pioneer in creating a new genre, so I don’t worry too much about existing genres
Kojima indicated his interest in several directions, including hard sci-fi, explaining his passion for the space world and his desire to create a different extraterrestrial experience. He also expressed a possible interest in the American West and did not rule out working on a historical project, although he admitted that the genre has been done many times before.
Kojima is no stranger to breaking stereotypes, having previously coined the term Strand Game to describe Death Stranding before its release in an attempt to introduce a new classification that reflects the unconventional nature of the experience. OD seems to be moving in the same direction, as Kojima hints that it may redefine the service model in games, although he openly admits that he is not sure if the idea will work yet.
Kojima described Physint as “an interactive game and a movie at the same time” that blends storytelling, live acting, sound, costumes, and artistic themes into a hybrid experience that transcends the traditional definitions of games or movies. So far, well-known names such as Elle Fanning, Ma Dong-seok, and Minami Hamabe have been revealed as part of the cast, but the project is still in the concept stage since it was announced last August.
Neither OD or Physint has a specific release date yet, keeping fans on pins and needles while the community awaits additional news about Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, including the possible announcement of a PC version.
Kojima’s recent statements reaffirm that he sees games not just as an entertainment product, but as an open-ended artistic medium that seeks to redefine the relationship between player and experience, even if that means taking risks with uncertain outcomes.
