Just weeks after announcing its shift to an “AI first” strategy, PUBG publisher Krafton has revealed a new plan aimed at downsizing via a voluntary resignation program open to all employees, including those with less than 5 years of experience.
According to a Business Korea report, the offers vary depending on the employee’s length of service and include:
- One year or less: 6 months of salary
- Two years or less: 12 months
- 5 years or less: 18 months
- 8 years or less: 24 months
- 11 years or less: 30 months
- More than 11 years: 36 months (3 full years of salary)
Despite the enormity of the compensation, Krafton insists that this is not a layoff, but rather a way to support employees in “identifying new career directions in an era of major AI-driven shifts.”
In an official statement, Krafton said:
“The primary goal is to enable members to plan their development and make new decisions inside or outside the company amidst the AI transformation era.
Along with the voluntary resignation plan, the company also announced an almost complete hiring freeze with the exception of new title development teams and teams specializing in AI and its technologies
This decision came despite Krafton announcing record profits in its latest financial report, reinforcing concerns that the company is seeking to replace part of its workforce with AI in the coming years.
Is this a smart move to keep up with development, or a prelude to reducing reliance on humans and replacing them with AI?
