New information regarding the God of War series based on the popular PlayStation franchise was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con, after a period of stumbling in the early stages of development.
The series was officially announced in December 2022, and the scriptwriting phase kicked off in January 2024. However, the project faced a major setback in October after some executive producers pulled out, leading to a reworking of the project from scratch.
But now, the project seems to be back on track, with a new writer and producer, Ronald D. Moore, who shared important details about the project’s progress during a panel at the show.
In an interview with Collider, Ronald D. Moore confirmed that the work is still in the screenwriting stage, and expressed his great admiration for the Kratos universe, especially the depth of the mythology the game offers.
He also revealed that game director Cory Barlog is directly involved in the development of the series and has had several meetings with Moore that have helped him determine the overall structure of the 10-episode Season 1.
Moore explained that the series will be heavily based on the events of God of War 2018, without being a literal recreation of the scenes, as the general spirit of the characters and storyline will be preserved while providing a TV experience in line with the nature of the new medium.
Despite previous confirmation that there are plans for at least two seasons, Moore declined to talk about the number of seasons for sure, stating that he doesn’t like to rush into pre-planning. He also didn’t give an exact start date, but confirmed that cameras won’t start rolling until 2026 at the earliest.
