In a new interview with TechNod, director Qiwei Liang, responsible for the development of Phantom Blade Zero, explained that his upcoming game does not belong to the Soulslayer genre as many think, but rather is a completely innovative experience that offers a new foundation in the gaming world.
Liang pointed out that the gaming market today is oversaturated with soulslice games, whether from big developers like From Software or from newer teams like the developers of Lies of P. He added that this trend has made players face the same genre everywhere, reducing the element of uniqueness.
The game is built as a fighting game first and foremost, not an RPG, and relies heavily on Chinese kung fu, presenting it in a way that has never been done before.
The director promised that the experience would be up to expectations and different from the mainstream.
At the moment, the game does not have an official release date, but expectations indicate that it may be released next year, and the last review was two months ago, focusing on highlighting its features on the PS5 Pro.
Phantom Blade Zero is likely to make a comeback at Tokyo Game Show 2025 or perhaps during The Game Awards at the end of the year.
