The PlayStation 5 has once again proven to be one of Sony’s most successful consoles ever after its sales in the United States surpassed the PlayStation 3’s lifetime total sales according to new data from renowned analytics firm Circana.
Analyst Mat Piscatella, senior director at Circana, revealed via a post on the BlueSky platform that US gaming market data through September 2025 confirms that the PlayStation 5 has surpassed the PlayStation 3 in cumulative total sales.
Piscatella added that the PS5 is ahead of the PS4 by 4.6% when comparing sales on a time-equivalent basis over the same number of months since launch for each platform.
The PS5 has been ahead of the PS4 for a long time and by September 2025 the gap is 4.6% in its favor – Mat Piscatella
This superiority reflects the success of Sony’s strategy of focusing on hardware updates such as the ladder version and mid-generation upgrades, which has maintained strong demand even 5 years after launch.
In the same report, Piscatella also talked about the performance of the recently released and critically acclaimed Ghost of Yotei and the analyst said that its sales in the US during the first week were almost identical to Ghost of Tsushima’s sales when it was released in 2020.
He noted that this result is amazing because the number of PS5 users today is less than the PS4 player base at the time of Tsushima’s launch and circumstances at the time such as the coronavirus pandemic made the demand for games exceptionally high.
Any concern about Ghost of Yotei’s performance is completely unwarranted, the game is a very solid success – Mat Piscatella
As PlayStation 5 sales continue to grow and exclusives continue to be a big hit, it looks like Sony is continuing to establish itself as the strongest competitor in the console market.
Do you think that the PlayStation 5 could globally outsell the PlayStation 4 as well? And do you think Ghost of Yotei will be Sony’s next big hit like Tsushima?
