Since its release, Borderlands 4 has been criticized for performance issues that have led many gamers to give it the derisive nickname Stutterlands 4. While much of the public has expressed their displeasure with the unstable technical experience, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford’s response is even more controversial.
In his latest Xbox commentary, Pitchford stated: “If you’re not happy with the experience, please get your money back from Steam.” He added that every PC gamer should accept the direct correlation between their hardware specs and the performance they can deliver, emphasizing that the game runs at 30 frames per second on minimum specs and 60 on recommended specs, with better performance possible with “good systems and perfect tuning.”
One gamer responded that the game barely hits 30 frames even with the recommended specs, and that it took him days to reach acceptableperformance, with him having to use techniques like DLSS or frame generation, which he doesn’t favor.
Pitchford’s response was sharp, likening it to trying to put a Ferrari engine in a monster truck and expecting Ferrari-like results. “If you don’t want to use performance optimization techniques like DLSS, and you don’t like the frame rate you’re getting, simply play another game,” he said.
He concluded by emphasizing that the game was designed to be “acceptable at 30 frames and excellent at 60 frames,”while leaving room for players to choose their own balance between graphics, resolution, and frame rate.
These statements divided the community between those who thought Pitchford was honest and realistic and those who thought his response was condescending and further angered players who were expecting a smoother experience from a major release of a huge series like Borderlands.
