New leaks have revealed that Saints Row’s 2022 relaunch was not Volition’s initial plan, but rather the game was originally a direct sequel to the third installment titled Saints Row Cinco.
According to a new video from content creator mrsaintsgodzilla21, based on his visit to Volition’s studio in 2019, the team was developing a story that would bring all the original gang members along with the boss back to the forefront. The game would have completely erased the events of Saints Row 4, including the alien invasion and even the death of Johnny Gat.
The game was described as a fan service for fans of the series, with a mix in narrative tone of 20% from Saints Row 3 and 80% from Saints Row 2. The voice actor for Pierce had already recorded some dialog, and players were to encounter Dex on a secret mission to finish his story.
Features that were canceled with the Reboot:
- The return of the Ultor organization instead of Marshals.
- A skill tree divided between Fame, Money and Power.
- The return of the Body Shields mechanic but it was rejected for being “too violent”.
- Full customization of Santo Ileso via Criminal Ventures.
- Proclamation system to enforce laws within controlled areas.
- The return of Cribs and church customization with the purchase of furniture from stores.
- Cheats system unlocked via a huge secret at the end of the game.
- The addition of New Game+ (canceled).
However, with the acquisition of Deep Silver by THQ Nordic, the company rejected the idea of a sequel and forced Volition to redo the project from scratch, with strict restrictions on text and even language, eventually turning the project into the 2022 reboot, which was heavily criticized for its new style.
