During an interview at Gamescom 2025, Silent Hill f producer Motoi Okamoto and director Al Yang refused to categorize the game as “Soulslike,” despite superficial similarities with mechanics like dodging and energy management.
Okamoto said:
“The core of the experience is centered on Ryukishi07’s narrative text, so we recommend everyone play it on story difficulty to get the authentic Silent Hill vibe.
He emphasized that they don’t agree with the label “Soulslike,” although some of the combat gestures make it seem that way at first glance.
In the same vein, Yang said that just because a character has the Dodging feature doesn’t automatically mean the game belongs in that category:
The development team explained that the shift to more dynamic combat was to keep up with the preferences of younger players who tend to favor fun challenges. However, they emphasize that Silent Hill f does not aim to replicate the stereotypical success of Silent Hill 2.
