After weeks of reports suggesting that Sony might be in the race to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, the Japanese company has come out with an official statement that ends the controversy once and for all.
In a recent interview with CEO Hiroki Tatoki, Sony confirmed that it will not be making any bid for Warner Bros. at this time, despite the American company being put on the sale list in recent weeks.
Tatoki said in his official statement:
“We currently have no desire for huge acquisitions within the American film industry. Combining existing studios does not necessarily mean increased profits and we are focused on fast-growing markets such as anime with relationships that encourage building collaborations and fully original works.
This statement puts an end to speculation that linked Sony to a Warner Bros. deal that would have put it in control of huge titles such as Harry Potter, DC Universe, Mortal Kombat, and other Warner Bros. owned brands.
Despite being out of the race, Sony is reportedly continuing to expand its PlayStation Studios division with a focus on selectively acquiring first- and second-party studios to develop original and exclusive projects.
Some sources have also indicated that the company is preparing for the PlayStation 6 generation with a bigger plan than the current generation, both in terms of the number of exclusives and the creative diversity of upcoming titles.
After the successes of movies like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and the expansion of the Aniplex studio, Sony’s new strategy seems to be based on independence and innovation rather than entering into huge acquisition races, and the company is focused on strengthening its position in the fields of anime and interactive entertainment rather than competing in Hollywood.
Do you think Sony’s decision to move away from Warner Bros. was a wise move, or was it a risky one?
