As 2025 draws to a close, Cloud Imperium Games provided an update on the development status of its mega-projects Star Citizen and Squadron 42 via a lengthy message from studio founder and creator Chris Roberts.
Roberts explained that all of Squadron 42’s chapters are now playable from start to finish with a total duration of over 40 hours and the team is currently working on the final phase of development which focuses on optimizing performance, fixing bugs and closing essential tasks in preparation for moving to the final testing phase before launch.
He pointed out that the long years of development have resulted in an advanced technical architecture that allows a smooth transition between walking, driving vehicles and traveling through planets and star systems without any loading screens, which provides a high level of immersion that is difficult to replicate in other games, and added that the quality of content from script writing, acting performance, character design, environments, ships and others makes the experience cohesive and able to draw the player into the game world completely.
As for Star Citizen, Roberts revealed a recent beta update that supports virtual reality headsets, as almost everything in the game has become manually interactable, and he considered that this trend justifies the great focus on the smallest details of environments, equipment and ships, stressing at the same time that VR support is still at an early and experimental stage.
He emphasized that this year has seen a large number of updates to the alpha versions of Star Citizen as the studio seeks to gradually improve the core experience while taking advantage of the technologies being built in parallel with Squadron 42.
All in all, Roberts’ statements reflect that the two projects have entered a more mature phase, especially Squadron 42, which seems closer than ever to launch, while Star Citizen continues to evolve as an ambitious platform that expands technologically year after year.
