A new leak from famed leaker KeplerL2 on the NeoGAF forum has sparked widespread debate about the future of the Steam Deck, suggesting that Valve’s second-generation handheld won’t see the light of day until 2028.
This date is in line with previous statements from Valve, which emphasized that it will not introduce a new version until there is a significant improvement in performance and efficiency. At the launch of the Steam Deck OLED in November 2023, designer Lawrence Yang described the device as “the final version of the first generation,”adding that the better technology that justifies its successor may not arrive for at least two or three years.
In January 2025, reports surfaced claiming that Steam Deck 2 would use the AMD Ryzen Z2 processor, but one of the company’s engineers Pierre-Loup Griffais categorically denied this, emphasizing that “there will be no Steam Deck powered by the Z2.”
While there are no official plans for a successor, Valve continues to support the original Steam Deck and its OLED version, while competition from the likes of ASUS and Lenovo intensifies in the gaming laptop market.
Despite KeplerL2’s reliability in his previous leaks, this information remains a rumor, especially since 2028 is still more than two years away. Until an official announcement from Valve, the future of Steam Deck 2 remains open to all possibilities.
