In a surprising development, Remedy, developer of games like Alan Wake and Control, has announced that CEO Tero Virtala has stepped down, effective immediately, following a mutual agreement with the board of directors, ending a tenure that has lasted since August 2016.
According to the company’s official statement, it was agreed that the board will begin the search process for a new CEO immediately, and Virtala will remain with the company during a limited transition period to support the handover and ensure management stability.
Markus Mäki, Remedy co-founder and board member since 1995, has been appointed as interim CEO effective October 22, 2025. Mäki is also a key member of the company’s production team and has announced that he will step down as Chairman of the Board during his executive tenure, to be succeeded by Henri Österlund.
Mackey said in his statement:
“I would like to thank Tero Vertala for his significant contribution to Remedy’s management since 2016. He has been a valuable business partner and I wish him all the best for the future.
The move comes a few weeks after Vertala’s comments about the poor launch of FBC: Firebreak, in which he admitted that the game did not meet the company’s internal business goals, impacting Remedy’s financial performance and reigniting the debate over the company’s multiplayer strategy.
With Vertala’s departure, Remedy is facing a critical phase as it works on major projects such as the Max Payne 1 & 2 remake in collaboration with Rockstar as well as supporting Control Ultimate Edition with new updates including new missions, costumes and support for the PlayStation 5 Pro. Vertala’s departure opens the door for potential management changes that may affect the company’s future direction, especially given the increasing competition in the AAA gaming industry.
