With the release of Dying Light: The Beast looming on September 19, Techland has shed light on the return of Kyle Crane, the protagonist of the first installment who has been absent from the series since 2015.
In an official post on Pilgrim Outpost, the company explained that Crane will appear in a deformed and brutalized form as a result of more than a decade of captivity and traumatic experiences. However, the team wanted the hero to remain charismatic and powerful, so aging features such as gray hair or baldness were ruled out, as they would detract from his heroic image.
Techland artists emphasized that Krynn’s design went through several updates until it looked authentic, making sure that the scars and marks on his body reflected the type of experiences he had endured. Even the color of his eyes and the veins in his arms were meticulously designed to reflect this change.
According to the studio, Crane in The Beast carries a clear duality: A monstrous side filled with rage, and a human side that searches for his former self after he begins to break free from his tormentors’ captivity and seek revenge. His voice in the game is provided by actor Roger Craig Smith, giving him additional depth.
Although the game has been described by players as Dying Light 3, it is a direct continuation of the series with a major shift in narrative and characterization. With a focus on Crane’s evolution between brutality and humanity, it is expected to offer a unique experience for fans of survival games.
