More than a decade after Sleeping Dogs became a beloved classic among open-world gamers, a movie adaptation of the game seems to be finally on track.
Actor and producer Simu Liu, best known for his role in Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has revealed that the first draft of the Sleeping Dogs script has been completed.
In a post on his Xboxaccount, Liu shared two photos: The first is of his dog Chopa and the second is of the official screenplay for the movie with a caption suggesting that the draft has been completed and sent out for feedback. The screenwriter’s name has been removed from the page, suggesting there may be a new writer or director yet to be announced.
The original 2012 game, developed by United Front Games and published by Square Enix, centered on the story of undercover cop Wei Shen infiltrating Hong Kong gangs. The game was widely praised for its elaborate combat system, rich open world, and mix of action and thrills in the style of classic Hong Kong movies.
Despite the great critical success, poor sales halted any plans for a sequel, leaving the game unfinished until today. However, it seems that Hollywood has decided to revive the series on the big screen, especially with Simo Liu insisting on producing the movie himself after previous failed attempts that were supposed to be led by actor Donnie Yen.
There are still no details about the director or when filming will begin, but the completion of the first draft is a crucial step towards officially launching the project, and if everything goes as planned, the coming years could see the birth of one of the most anticipated cinematic adaptations in the world of video games.
Sleeping Dogs, which wasn’t a commercial success upon its release, may finally get its second chance, but this time in the Hollywood spotlight.
