As the launch of Resident Evil Requiem approaches, the development team is gradually revealing the features of the upcoming experience, and after confirming the return of some characters from previous installments, producer Masato Kumazawa provided a clearer vision of the new protagonist Grace Ashcroft and how she is radically different from the series’ heroes that players are used to seeing.
In an interview with CheckpointGaming, Komazawa said that the primary goal of choosing Grace was to “scare the players,” noting that she is “the scariest, most vulnerable” of any of the series’ previous heroes and that the team wants the player to experience the horror through her perspective and feel her true vulnerability within the game world.
Unlike characters like Chris Redfield or Leon Kennedy, who combine combat experience with extreme physical ability, Grace is “a completely ordinary person.” However, she is not inexperienced, as she works as an FBI analyst, making her “more familiar with weapons” than a character like Ethan, who the producer tends to consider “the most ordinary” in the series so far.
Komazawa explained that Grace is not a professional fighter and that her gameplay design is based on a sense of constant danger and lack of resources. The team wants the player to feel that they must always think about how to survive with minimal means and that every decision changes the course of the encounter. Despite the return of the classic horror and survival theme, Requiem will not shy away from innovation, featuring new elements and innovative weapons that give the experience a balance between originality and modernity.
These details come at a time when expectations for the game are rising, especially with reports of an upcoming expansion, Capcom looking to outsell Resident Evil Village, and with a new character like Grace, Requiem seems poised to offer a completely different vision of the horror the series has come to know.
